The Bullring has witnessed its fair share of classic encounters, but the New Year’s Day thriller between the Joburg Super Kings and Durban’s Super Giants at the Wanderers Stadium will go down as an instant Betway SA20 classic.

Donovan Ferreira stole the spotlight, proving that the modern cricketer can truly do it all. 'The Don' bludgeoned 33 off only 10 balls with his swinging blade to push JSK up to 205/4. His death-over blitz included four massive sixes that cleared the Wanderers ropes with room to spare.

But it was in the field that he had arguably an even bigger impact. Ferreira was initially behind the stumps for DSG’s run-chase, but in an astute tactical move from JSK skipper Faf du Plessis, the 27-year-old was asked to discard the gloves (with Matthew de Villiers stepping in) and take the ball.

It was no gimmick either. DSG’s Heinrich Klaasen was at the crease, and Ferreira boasted an incredible record against the power-hitter. The plan worked a treat, with Ferreira having Klaasen caught by none other than Du Plessis just when he was set to explode on 29 off 19 balls.

Ferreira went on to complete a match-turning spell of 1/24 from his four overs - a miserly economy rate of just six runs per over.

But his work for the night was not done yet. After the completion of his spell, Ferreira reclaimed the gloves to take up his wicketkeeping position. It was from here that he made arguably his biggest contribution of the night.

The match was hanging on a knife-edge when DSG’s Simon Harmer hammered the penultimate ball of the match for a boundary to level up the scores. The visitors therefore required just a single off Wiaan Mulder’s final ball.

Unfortunately for DSG, Harmer missed the last delivery before attempting to scamper home for the winning bye with Eathan Bosch. But Ferreira - like he had done all evening - held his nerve to hit the bullseye and run out Bosch, tying up the game and taking it into SA20’s first-ever Super Over.
