Chris Morris and Neil McKenzie predicts Durban’s Super Giants S5 XI
Durban’s Super Giants have undergone a significant makeover ahead of Betway SA20 Season 5, but if their collection of international superstars delivers on its enormous potential, opposition teams could have a serious problem on their hands.
A change of kit, coaching staff and playing personnel has brought renewed optimism to the Durban-based franchise, who boast a batting line-up so deep in talent that fitting all their big names into the starting XI could prove their biggest challenge.
That was the assessment of former Proteas duo Chris Morris and Neil McKenzie as they unpacked their predicted Super Giants XI, with the sheer quality of the available batting options immediately standing out.
“I'm excited about the team, but in terms of selection, batting, that's a headache waiting to happen. You can't fit them all in,” McKenzie said.
He was not exaggerating. Jos Buttler, Devon Conway, Liam Livingstone, Kane Williamson, Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram headline a formidable collection of international talent, while South African batters David Bedingham, Marques Ackerman and Tony de Zorzi provide further depth.
It is an embarrassment of riches that gives Durban plenty of flexibility, but also leaves coach Lance Klusener with some difficult decisions. There is no shortage of firepower, experience or proven performers in the franchise T20 circuit. The challenge will be finding the right combination and ensuring that everyone has a clear role.
For McKenzie, however, one signing stands above the rest as a potential difference-maker: England and former MI Cape Town allrounder Sam Curran.
“I think the biggest thing for DSG is the signing of Sam Curran. I think wherever he goes, silverware follows,” he said.
“He adds balance to your side, he can bat anywhere. He's a left-hander, a wily bowler. Good with the ball, can catch everything. Just a fighter and hungry for that fight and getting in the contest.”
Curran’s value lies in the options he offers. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball gives the Super Giants greater freedom to structure their side, while his competitive temperament could prove invaluable in the pressure moments that often determine T20 matches.
Morris and McKenzie’s predicted XI reflects that balance, with Ackerman opening alongside Buttler before Markram and Klaasen provide the middle-order muscle. Livingstone and Curran add further international experience and finishing power, while Sunil Narine offers another dimension at No 7.
Few players in franchise cricket can match Narine’s versatility. A destructive opening option as well as a proven wicket-taking spinner, the West Indian gives Durban the flexibility to alter their batting order according to the match situation.
Eathan Bosch was selected at No 8, adding another all-round option to a side that appears well equipped to attack opponents with both bat and ball.
New Protea Marques Ackerman, star batter Heinrich Klaasen, speedster Gerald Coetzee and young talent Andile Simelane all make the cut in the Morris-McKenzie DSG XI
The bowling resources are equally intriguing. Gerald Coetzee offers express pace, while Kwena Maphaka and Andile Simelane provide exciting young options. The presence of Simon Harmer adds experience and control, with Markram, Livingstone and Klaasen also capable of offering overs when required.
That depth could be crucial over a demanding tournament, particularly if conditions along the coast offer assistance to the bowlers. Morris even suggested that weather could play a significant role in determining how dangerous the Super Giants become.
On paper, Durban have the personnel to build a formidable team. Their challenge is to turn that individual quality into a coherent unit, rather than simply assembling a collection of celebrated names.
Betway SA20 has repeatedly shown that star power alone does not guarantee success. Roles, balance and consistency matter just as much as reputation, especially when the tournament reaches its decisive stages.
The Super Giants certainly have the firepower to make a serious statement in Season 5. Whether their selectors can find the right formula from such an extraordinary pool of talent may ultimately determine how far they go.
