'They're giving me responsibility' - Evan Jones ready to repay DSG's trust

For Evan Jones, being retained by Durban's Super Giants ahead of Betway SA20 Season 5 represents more than continuity. It is a sign of trust, and one he is determined to repay on the field.

After spending time with different franchises during the competition's early years, Jones is preparing for a second consecutive season at Kingsmead and believes the decision to bring him back carries added responsibility.

"It shows a bit of responsibility from my side too," Jones said at the Betway SA20 Padel Day. "Obviously, they're giving me responsibility and they back me and obviously, I want to go on the field and show that it actually means something to me.

"So, obviously, I want to put that performance in again this season so it can be an ongoing thing."

Jones produced several encouraging performances during his first season with DSG, highlighted by a blistering 17-ball 43 against Joburg Super Kings in the Super Over thriller at the Wanderers, and is now focused on building on those foundations.

He credits the franchise's support staff and environment for helping players maximise their potential.

"The team we have behind the scenes is phenomenal," he said. "So, work closely with them to see where we can go better."

Having been limited to just one discipline due to injury last season, the all-rounder is also targeting a greater impact with both bat and ball in the upcoming campaign.

"Obviously bowling this season. So, I would like to contribute in both aspects as much as I can and hopefully that brings in good results for the team."

That added versatility could make Jones an increasingly valuable asset for a Durban side looking to turn stability into success. The franchise has retained a significant portion of its core squad, a move Jones believes reflects management's confidence in the group's ability.

Evan Jones, Durban's Super Giants allrounder, will hope to help the team click in Betway SA20 Season 5.

"We've retained quite a bit of guys, so I think from management that shows a lot of trust in all the players," he said.

"So, obviously now it's in our hands to really go and do something special with that."

Jones also credited captain Aiden Markram for setting the tone within the squad, highlighting the Proteas T20 captain’s competitive edge and leadership style.

"I think he's a phenomenal guy to play under," Jones said. "It's that hunger in everything he does. If he bowls, he bats. If he captains, I think that's a thing he instilled in all of us."
