INCREDIBLE SEASON 4 MOMENTS: JASON SMITH'S BOXING DAY BLITZ
The modern T20 player’s barometer is no longer purely the number of runs scored or wickets taken. It is about the impact a player can make on any given match.
This relates to a five-ball cameo, a wicket-maiden over, or simply a spectacular catch that changes the momentum of the match.
Utilising this metric, we’ve looked past the traditional milestones of centuries and five-wicket hauls and selected a list of “Incredible Moments” from Betway SA20 Season 4 in this new series.
SEASON 4 INCREDIBLE MOMENT 1
Jason Smith: 41 off 14 balls (4x4, 3x6, SR 292.85)
MI Cape Town vs Durban's Super Giants | 26 December 2025 | Newlands
There are few better occasions than Boxing Day under the watch of Table Mountain to lay down a statement of intent.
When DSG posted a record-breaking 232/5 - fuelled by Devon Conway’s half-century and quick-fire cameos from Kane Williamson, Aiden Markram, and Evan Jones - the opening match of Season 4 felt like a foregone conclusion.
MI Cape Town’s chase, anchored by a masterful century from Ryan Rickelton, was beginning to look like a valiant but doomed mathematical impossibility. Then came Smith.
Born and bred in the Western Cape, the Wynberg Boys' alumnus had spent the last few seasons thriving on the East Coast. Returning to his home turf under the MI Cape Town guise, the powerful all-rounder had a point to prove. And prove it he did.
Walking to the crease with the required run rate climbing into the stratosphere, Smith didn’t just nudge the ball around; he took a sledgehammer to his former team's attack.
In a blistering display of power-hitting, he smashed 41 runs off just 14 deliveries - bludgeoning four boundaries and three massive sixes.
For a brief, intoxicating window, the momentum swung sharply. The Newlands crowd, previously quietened by the sheer weight of DSG's total, erupted into a frenzy with the belief that a miracle could be achieved.
He didn't just partner with Rickelton; he amplified him, taking the pressure off the opener and turning a desperate chase into a genuine spectacle.
Unfortunately for Smith and MI Cape Town, there was no fairy-tale ending, as he was eventually caught off Markram’s bowling.
But Smith had delivered a box-office performance, which ultimately earned him a ticket to last year’s T20 World Cup in India.
Smith's incredible innings earned him the Switch Game Changer award.
