BETWAY SA20’S FIRST-EVER SUPER OVER

The Betway SA20 started off 2026 with a bang when Joburg Super Kings (JSK) and Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) delivered a frenetic first game of the year, culminating in the competition's first-ever Super Over.

Prior to the drama of the tie-breaker, the initial 40 overs provided a heavyweight slugfest perfectly suited for the Highveld. JSK amassed 205/4 batting first, with American import Shubham Ranjane bashing his first SA20 half-century.

The home team looked on course for an even larger total, but it was DSG’s mystery Afghan spinner, Noor Ahmad, who arrested the momentum with an impeccable four-over spell of 3/12.

DSG looked well on track to chase down the target, but JSK wicketkeeper Don Ferreira - who had earlier abandoned the gloves to bowl and take the crucial wicket of Heinrich Klaasen—threw down the stumps on the final ball to tie the game as the visitors tried to scramble a bye.

The ensuing Super Over contest was absolute chaos, packed with dropped catches, run-outs, superb yorkers, and boundary ropes.

Englishman Richard Gleeson was handed the responsibility by his JSK skipper, Faf du Plessis, to send down the crucial six balls. Evan Jones and Jos Buttler walked out for DSG.

The pressure was immense, and young Matthew de Villiers became its first victim when he shelled a regulation catch off the very first ball of Gleeson’s over. DSG were unable to capitalise, however, as Gleeson fired in a string of dead-eye yorkers, conceding just five runs in total. Jones was also run out off the final ball trying to stretch for a second.

Chasing just six runs to win, JSK's Rilee Rossouw handed his team the perfect start, forcing a boundary off the very first ball after a wild hack to the leg side. DSG requested an LBW review, but it was made more in hope than reality.

With only two runs required off the remaining four balls, Rossouw missed the second delivery but sent the Bullring into an absolute frenzy when he slapped the third ball to the extra-cover boundary, sealing a spectacular victory for JSK.
