New Year's Eve in Cape Town is unlike any other in Mzansi. The Cape Minstrels begin the festivities, and Long Street is abuzz with activity.

But on the last night of 2025, all eyes were fixed on Newlands, where West Indian powerhouse Sherfane Rutherford delivered an all-round masterclass.

With his Caribbean flair, Rutherford became the home team’s ultimate party pooper with a spectacular double-act, smashing an unbeaten 47* before tearing through the opposition with figures of 4/24.

Newlands has enjoyed a long lineage of legendary West Indians who have graced the famous ground, and Rutherford certainly added his name to the list in emphatic fashion.

He blasted an unbeaten 47 off only 15 balls, striking a half-dozen sixes as he powered the Capitals to a mammoth 220/5. The unbroken 86-run partnership off a mere 27 balls with Dewald Brevis was an exhibition of clean striking that was worth the price of admission alone.

But Rutherford was not done yet. Despite not being widely known for his bowling ability, he broke the back of a dangerous MI Cape Town lineup with an unexpectedly lethal spell to finish with career-best figures.
