Birrell assembles fearsome X-factor pace cartel for Sunrisers
Batters may provide the entertainment in T20 cricket, but it's bowlers that win titles.
Nobody knows this better than Sunrisers Eastern Cape coach Adrian Birrell, who has guided his team to an unprecedented three Betway SA20 titles in four seasons.
Furthermore, Birrell places a major emphasis on genuine pace as his team’s undeniable X-factor, and the veteran tactician has certainly assembled one of the most potent pace attacks in the history of the competition after the Season 5 auction.
While rival franchises chased balance and batting depth, the Sunrisers doubled down on the one asset that has underpinned their rise to becoming the competition's most successful franchise.
Already blessed with superstar Marco Jansen, the 'Uitenhage Express' Anrich Nortje, New Zealand speedster Adam Milne, and local paceman Lutho Sipamla in the Sunrisers’ firing squad, Birrell loaded up some more heavy artillery in Proteas left-armer Nandre Burger and England allrounder Craig Overton.
“It's [pace] absolutely a huge X-factor, so yes, we wanted those two players,” Birrell said.
“There were other options that we could have gone to had we not been able to get them. We didn't have a massive budget, but we got them at base price, both of them, so we were absolutely delighted.”
Jansen, of course, has been central to the Sunrisers’ success with 60 wickets across the previous four seasons - just one shy of former teammate Ottneil Baartman as the leading bowler in Betway SA20 history - with his ability to influence games with the new ball and close out innings at the death. This, along with contributing valuable runs, provides the St George’s Park side a competitive advantage few teams can match.
Birrell's vision extends beyond one superstar, though.
The acquisition of Overton adds another seam-bowling allrounder capable of fulfilling a similar role to Jansen, while offering valuable insurance should injuries strike. Birrell also highlighted the importance of retaining Adam Milne, one of the competition's most consistently threatening swing bowlers.
“Marco's done so well over the four seasons for us; he's vital for us in the powerplay and at the death, and his batting and fielding are outstanding. So, he's a three-format player, a three-stage player for us, and so is Overton now, to do a similar role and bat in a similar position,” he said.
“But then we've got Adam Milne, who's an out-and-out swing bowler and has got great skills at the front and the back end. Delighted to have him in the team again, and that's why we're so keen to retain him.”
And that’s even before Nortje’s raw pace is considered.
“Anrich Nortje brings us that thunderbolt,” Birrell said of the fiery fast bowler who claimed 18 wickets in Sunrisers’ successful Season 4 campaign.
“So, I think we've got options within that. They can't all play, but we've got good options and backup for any injuries that could happen. I'm delighted with our bowling attack.”
A feature of Birrell and the Sunrisers’ success is the vision the franchise possesses. They are willing to exercise patience in the short term to achieve the long-term goal.
And it shows in the acquisition of Burger. The 31-year-old was plagued by injury during his time at Joburg Super Kings and is currently recovering from a recurrence of a lumbar stress reaction in his back, which forced him to withdraw from the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 season while playing for the Texas Super Kings in June.
But Birrell has shown faith in Burger by investing in the southpaw’s future.
“We’ve got another left-arm seamer in Nandre, who's very experienced,” he said. “He is injured right now, but the background checks that we've done indicate that he should be okay for the tournament. When he is fit, he bowls quickly, so we wanted to get him on our books.”
The Orange Army will have an opportunity to see Birrell’s Horsemen of the Apocalypse in action in the Season 5 opening game when Sunrisers host Pretoria Capitals at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Sunday, January 17.
