TOP 5 BATTING MASTERCLASSES FROM SEASON 4
The Betway SA20 Season 4 was a record-breaking year for the League, featuring the most centuries in a single season (four) and some of the most dramatic finishes in South African T20 history.
Here are the five standout batting performances from the season:
1. Dewald Brevis: 101 (Pretoria Capitals vs Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Newlands)
The League’s record signing lived up to the immense hype by scoring a magnificent century in the grand final at Newlands. Walking to the crease at 1/2 , and under immense pressure, Brevis delivered a century for the ages. His 101 was the first century ever scored in an SA20 final. He struck seven massive sixes and scored close to 64% of his team’s entire total.
2. Shai Hope: 118* (Pretoria Capitals vs Durban’s Super Giants, Kingsmead)
The West Indies T20 captain etched his name in the record books by registering the highest individual score in SA20 history. His unbeaten 118 was a masterclass in controlled aggression, slamming nine boundaries and nine sixes to surpass Kyle Verreynne’s 116 not out for the Capitals against MI Cape Town at Centurion in Season 2.
3. Ryan Rickelton: 113* (MI Cape Town vs Joburg Super Kings, Wanderers)
The League’s all-time highest scorer made history this season by becoming the first player to score multiple SA20 centuries. He opened the season with a marvellous 113 at Newlands against DSG before following it up with an even better unbeaten 113 off 60 balls against Joburg Super Kings at the Bullring in the El Clasico. Rickelton stroked eight boundaries and nine sixes.
4. Sherfane Rutherford: 74* (Pretoria Capitals vs Joburg Super Kings, Wanderers)
Rutherford almost single-handedly spearheaded Capitals’ run to the final with 334 runs at an average of 66.80 and strike-rate of 165.34. But his most defining innings came at the Wanderers in the Jukskei derby after Capitals were reduced to a disastrous 7/5. The West Indian delivered an amazing counterattack with an undefeated 74 to drag his team to a competitive total and eventually a miracle victory.
5. Tristan Stubbs & Matthew Breetzke: 114* partnership (Pretoria Capitals vs Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Newlands)
This partnership was so good it demanded that both Stubbs and Breetzke be included. The former Grey High School mates combined in perfect harmony with an unbeaten 114-run stand that defined the championship.
Chasing a testing target, the duo stayed calm under immense pressure despite coming together at 48/4 and the run-rate required reaching 14 runs to the over heading into the final four overs.
Breetzke (68 not out off 49 balls) before Stubbs exploded (63 not out off 41 balls). The skipper struck the winning runs with consecutive sixes off Bryce Parsons in the final over to secure Sunrisers Eastern Cape their third title in four years.
