SUNRISERS' MARCO JANSEN THE BIG WINNER AT CSA AWARDS

Sunrisers Eastern Cape players are well-acquainted with silverware and star allrounder Marco Jansen claimed some more when he walked away with the coveted SA Men’s Cricketer of the Year award in Midrand on Thursday evening.

Jansen was the big winner on the night, lauded for his performances across all three formats for the Proteas’ Men’s team over the past year.

The 24-year-old, of course, also played a major role in the Sunrisers claiming back-to-back Betway SA20 titles over the same period too.

The lanky fast bowler topped the bowling charts in Season 2 with 20 wickets, including a career-best 5/30 in the Final against Durban’s Super Giants at Newlands.

Jansen feels that performance set him up for a sparkling international season with the Proteas.

“Very grateful to get this award. Obviously we work very hard for them,” he said.

“I definitely think it helped (the performance in the Betway SA20 Final). Every game that you play, every game that you do well in, you gain confidence from it.”

Jansen has the unique distinction of hitting the winning runs in the Season 1 final at the Wanderers and following it up by taking the last wicket the following year at Newlands.

“In Season 2, our analyst actually told me that I was going to take the winning wicket!” he said. “Maybe in Season 3 I can take the last wicket with a run out.”

The Sunrisers had a further reason to celebrate on the night with new recruit David Bedingham winning both the Proteas’ Test Player of the Year and International Newcomer of the Year awards.

Jansen is certainly excited about Bedingham joining the Sunrisers, especially after the top-order batter once again showed his class earlier in the week with a magnificent undefeated 188 for South Africa ‘A’ .

“Obviously, he’s a great addition to the side. He is a match-winner. He has a lot of shots in his armoury, so hopefully when he gets the chance he makes it count,” he said.

The Sunrisers kickstart Betway SA20 Season 3 with the competition opener against MI Cape Town in front of the Orange Army at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on January 9, 2025, while the historic venue will also host Qualifier 1 for the first time next year.

“The fans will be there. They will be loud. They will be going the whole game. Obviously, from our side we will give it our all like we have been doing the last two seasons,” Jansed added.

Elsewhere, Durban’s Super Giants captain Keshav Maharaj won Men’s Players Player of the Year, while his DSG teammate Quinton de Kock claimed the ODI Player of the Year.

Paarl Royals’ leg-spinner Nqaba Peter did the double domestically winning both the Men’s Domestic Newcomer of the Season and T20 Player of the Season. Nqaba’s Royals’ teammate Bjorn Fortuin also won two awards claiming both the Domestic Players Player of the Year and Men’s SACA Player of the Year.

The Royals claimed further silverware with teenage sensation Kwena Maphaka winning the SA U19 Player of the Year too.
