Graeme Smith hails SA20 talent pathway after teenager Rowles’s 2.9m pay day
Betway SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith has hailed the growing impact of the competition's Under-23 programme and broader talent development ecosystem after the Season 5 auction held in Johannesburg this week.
Smith highlighted the increasing confidence franchises are showing in South Africa's next generation of talent, particularly after the Joburg Super Kings shelled out the highest auction price of the day, R2.9 million, for teenage all-rounder Jason Rowles.
"When we introduced Under-23 slots to the franchises, they were very excited," said Smith.
"They've been open to investing in youth and our talent coming through. It's quite exciting to have youngsters being picked up and the value being seen in them.
"We obviously have talent coming through and I think we've seen South African talent grow from strength-to-strength year on year."
The Under-23 initiative forms part of a broader Betway SA20 talent development strategy that includes the League's extensive schools programme and the recently introduced rain Schools SA20 Derby Series, both designed to strengthen the pathway from schools cricket to the professional game, with young players earning opportunities alongside some of the biggest names in world cricket.
Rowles' entrance to the League for Season 5 is significant due to the 18-year-old having played in the inaugural rain Schools SA20 final two years ago. Fellow rain Schools SA20 participants JJ Basson (Paarl Royals), Bayanda Majola (Pretoria Capitals) and Nqobani Mokoena (Paarl Royals) are also set to feature in Betway SA20 Season 5.
"It's an exciting programme for us," Smith said. "It takes up a huge chunk of our time. We invest a lot of money in it. Last year, the schools programme involved 561 schools, girls and boys, so it's a lot of work.
"We see it as a key talent pipeline opportunity, and it's exciting when our franchises recognise that and invest in that programme as well."
Smith believes the long-term benefits extend far beyond identifying future stars for the League itself, helping to deepen South Africa's overall talent base and strengthen the pipeline feeding into the national teams.
"Those stories hopefully trigger a lot of dreams for kids at school, keep cricket relevant at that age group, get families supporting the game again, grow the fan base and see our talent come through," he said.
"And the story of Rowles this year, I can only imagine being a youngster that loves the game and is talented, what that triggers inside of you. The opportunity certainly is there and cricket is alive, which is great."
Betway SA20 Season 5 gets underway on January 17, 2027, when three-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape host Pretoria Capitals at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.
