JONTY RHODES CHALLENGES FANS: “BE FULLY COMMITTED”

During Betway SA20 Season 1, nine fans grabbed their share of the prize money put up by the League's title partners in their Betway Catch 2 Million competition. The first of those clean one-handed catches was taken at Kingsmead but on Thursday the Durban crowd arguably let themselves down during the clash between Durban’s Super Giants and MI Cape Town.

With 13 sixes flying into the stands and grass embankments during the MI Cape Town innings (including six from Ryan Rickelton and four from Kieron Pollard), there were many opportunities to get rich quick but, alas, nobody could.

While the sixes were flowing and one-handed catches were being spilled, SuperSport presenter Julia Stuart asked DSG fielding coach Jonty Rhodes for advice on behalf of the fans. In replying, the Proteas legend who was never shy to throw himself around the field during his career, questioned the Kingsmead crowd’s commitment.

“First you have to want the ball to come to you… and when it does come be fully committed. Don’t go half-heartedly, it will hurt!”

Rhodes, now 54, also looked eagerly forward to Season 2, now that it’s underway.

“It’s always exciting to be here, especially seeing Kingsmead like this – it’s going to get fuller and noisier so I can’t wait – what a vibe.”
