COUNTING DOWN THE BETWAY SA20 MVP TOP 50 PART 4: Players 11 - 20
At the conclusion of Betway SA20 Season 2, Heinrich Klaasen was confirmed as the Betway Player of the Season, but the strength of the League is evident by the world class performances and consistency of players throughout the top 50.
For the campaign, the League partnered with cricket’s leading analytics specialists, CricViz, to use their unique Most Valuable Player (MVP) data science model to help rank the players across the season.
The CricViz MVP model is a performance evaluation measure that is used to assess the performance of players across different roles (batting, bowling and fielding) and phases of the game. Additionally, players are rewarded for winning the match, with the captain of the winning team receiving an additional bonus.
Having already recapped numbers 21-50, in Part 4 we take a closer look at the players from 11-20 during Season 2 of South Africa's premier T20 league.
This segment is dominated by the captains, with four of them showing their influence on the success of their teams.
WHO RANKS WHERE: 41-50 | 31-40 | 21-30
MI Cape Town captain Kieron Pollard slots in at number 20, having produced some consistent performances even if his team couldn't - missing out on the playoffs for a second-straight season. The other three captains in this cohort, Faf du Plessis (Joburg Super Kings, 15), Aiden Markram (Sunrisers Eastern Cape, 13) and Keshav Maharaj (Durban's Super Giants, 12) did guide their teams to the playoffs, with Du Plessis in particular producing a few significant knocks in the back-end of the season. Ultimately, Markram and Maharaj lead their teams to the Final, where former's Orange Army marched to a second straight title.
The rest of the MVPs in the 11-20 range all had their moments in the sun during Season 2.
Kyle Verreynne (19) scored the fourth century of Season 2, with his unbeaten 116 for Pretoria Capitals against MICT not only denying the latter a bonus point and keeping the sky blues in playoffs contention but also moving to the top of the highest scores in the League's history.
Nandre Burger (18) in turn brought the fire for Joburg Super Kings, keeping batters on the hop throughout the campaign. The Proteas quick's aggressive left-armers produced 11 wickets at an economy rate of just 7.94.
Speaking of being miserly, they didn't come much better than Sunrisers Eastern Cape opening bowler Daniel Worrall (17). Despite bowling in the Powerplay, sometimes throughout, the Australian seamer maintained an economy rate of just 7.24 with the pressure he put batter's under yielding 17 wickets - the third-most of the campaign.
The first century of Season 2 was scored by Rassie van der Dussen (16), with his 104 against Joburg Super Kings early in the campaign also forming part of a new League-record 200-run partnership with Ryan Rickelton. The pair often set the tone of MI Cape Town, but few of their teammates matched them to highlight how important they were to keeping MICT's playoffs hopes alive so deep into the group stage.
Jon-Jon Smuts (14) had traded Gqeberha for Durban ahead of Season 2 and seamlessly slotted into the Super Giants' camp. He produced a memorable player of the match performance against his ex-team (75 runs and two wickets) but also added valuable contributions throughout as DSG made their way to a first Final appearance.
Meanwhile, the unlucky player to just miss out on the top 10 is Tristan Stubbs (11). The League's record buy, was at his best during Season 2 contributing 301 runs at an average of 60.20 and strike rate of 168.16 and showcasing his all-round hitting prowess throughout the campaign for Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Furthermore, Stubbs excellent work behind the stumps in 2024 saw him pick up a League-high 16 dismissals.
