DSG STAR BREETZKE SIGNS ON FOR STINT WITH NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
Durban's Super Giants batter Matthew Breetzke will join Northamptonshire Steelbacks for the English domestic T20 competition, the Blast.
Breetzke was the third-highest scorer in Betway SA20 Season 2, with his 416 runs at the top of the order for DSG helping them to an eventual runners-up finish. The 25-year-old will hope to translate his unique combination of power and elegance into similar form when the Blast gets underway near the end of May.
“I am very excited to join the Steelbacks for the upcoming Vitality Blast and really grateful for the opportunity,” said Breetzke in the Steelbacks release confirming his signing.
“I hope to contribute a lot on and off the field during my time at the club,” he added.
Breetzke has played three T20 internationals for South Africa, and will hope to assert his claims on future caps when a depleted squad plays T20 World Cup matches against West Indies before he heads to the East Midlands of England.
The Steelbacks' head coach John Sadler spoke keenly about the qualities Breetzke will add to the team.
“Matt is a very capable batter who will bring power, experience and some real determination to the side.
“We identified what we wanted to achieve with our signings this year and he perfectly fits the profile of the type of player that we wanted to bring in as our second overseas.”
Sadler is particularly excited by the fact that Breetzke is high on confidence. He followed his SA20 exploits by finishing as top scorer with 467 runs in the 2024 CSA T20 Challenge - while being the Warriors' captain.
“He has been excellent over the last couple of seasons domestically and we’ve been really impressed so we can’t wait to see what he can do this year.”
Breetzke will find some familiar faces in the Steelbacks camp. His SA20 Season 1 DSG teammate, David Willey serves as their captain in the Blast while Ashton Agar (who joined DSG for playoffs week this year) will join up after Australia's T20 World Cup campaign comes to an end.
