RABADA'S PACE AND KLAASEN'S POWER SET FOR IPL SHOWDOWN

As the chaotic scramble for Indian Premier League (IPL) playoff spots consumes the bottom half of the table, the teams at the top are already sharpening their weapons for the knockout stages.

Both Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT) have comfortably booked their playoff tickets, and it is no coincidence that their success is being driven by two South African superstars operating at the absolute peak of their powers: Heinrich Klaasen and Kagiso Rabada.

The Proteas spearhead has found a lethal rhythm in IPL 2026, with the fast bowler’s impact with the new ball being the primary catalyst for GT's top-four finish.

He currently has 21 wickets at an average of 21.95 - second only to Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar leading 24 at 16.37 - on the competition’s overall wicket-takers list.

Mitch McClenaghan, who is Rabada’s bowling coach at MI Cape Town in the Betway SA20, provided insight into what has lit the fire within the spearhead.

Mitchell McClenaghan, MI Cape Town bowling coach, challenged Kagiso Rabada ahead of Betway SA20 Season 4.

“I sat down with KG before the SA20, and he realised that his T20 game was not up to par. So for him, someone like KG, who's achieved so much in his career, realised that there were some improvements he needed to make in his T20 game, which was quite massive,” McClenaghan told ESPN’s Timeout podcast.

“And while we didn't solve the world at the SA20, from that point on, I knew leading into this IPL, he had a real bone to pick with his performances in the IPL in the last couple of years.

“So I think what he's done there is he wants to show everyone how good he is. And what I noticed, watching from the TV — I haven't seen him in person - but since the SA20, he looks in phenomenal shape. This is probably the best shape I've seen KG Rabada, and the numbers in terms of the pace are probably where it's come from.”

Former Indian superstar Ravichandran Ashwin recently described Rabada as looking "spiritually possessed" this season, with "thunderbolts coming out of his hand."

McClenaghan believes this is due to the extra physical work he’s put in behind the scenes.

“He went and got a sprint coach and he's been working with him, I think, since Christmas. And it's something I try and drum into all our guys back home is that you need to train like a sprinter. You have to be fast, you have to be explosive.

“If you can't run, you can't bowl. And it comes down to your time and contact on the ground, how quickly you can get from your back foot to your front foot, acceleration. It's so significant.

“And I think all that hard work he's done in the last three or four months, he's starting to get the juice that he deserves. So, it's a good template. Sometimes we forget that as athletes, you've got to try and keep on improving, and it's nice that he's flipped that switch.”

Meanwhile, on the batting front, Klaasen has anchored an explosive Sunrisers line-up, with the powerful right-hander amongst the top three run-getters in the competition with 555 runs at an average of 50.45 and a strike rate of 155.89.

He has continued to prove he is arguably the best player of spin in the world right now, actively destroying the opposition's primary spinners and forcing captains to rethink their entire defensive strategies.

As the playoffs approach, the tantalising prospect of a Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Gujarat Titans matchup looms large, setting the stage for a heavyweight bout between a fired-up Rabada and an in-form Klaasen.
