Joburg Super Kings promote Albie Morkel to head coach
Albie Morkel, the erstwhile Joburg Super Kings assistant coach, has been appointed as head coach at the Wanderers-based team for Betway SA20 Season 5.
Morkel will succeed founding coach, Stephen Fleming, who left his role after 18 years across the Super Kings franchise teams.
A big-hitting allrounder in his day, Morkel played 1 Test, 58 ODIs and 50 T20Is for South Africa in an international career from 2004 to 2015. Overall, he played 319 T20s scoring over 4000 runs and picking up close to 250 wickets before swapping his spikes for trainers and a catching mitt.
Since doing so, the 45-year-old has been a familiar face within the Super Kings family as assistant to Fleming at JSK as well as Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket.

"Albie Morkel has been an invaluable member of our coaching group over the years," Rupa Gurunath, the Joburg Super Kings owner said in a press release confirming his promotion.
"He understands what the Super Kings stand for, has built strong relationships with our players and staff, and has played an important role behind the scenes in player development. We are excited to see him take on this new role and lead the team into the next chapter."
Albie Morkel has been a regular face at the forefront of Joburg Super Kings activities, including being at the 'top table' during the Player Auction before Betway SA20 Season 2.
KS Viswanathan, Joburg Super Kings Director added: "Albie Morkel understands our culture well, having experienced it both as a player and as a coach. His leadership and understanding of the South African cricket landscape gives us great confidence as we move forward."
Speaking on his appointment, Albie Morkel said: "It is an incredible honour to be appointed head coach of Joburg Super Kings. From wearing the Super Kings jersey as a player to now leading one of its franchises as head coach, this journey is truly special. I look forward to building on the strong foundations we've created together and helping this group achieve its full potential."
The fifth edition of Betway SA20 starts on 17 January, 2027. Joburg Super Kings play their first match on January 18. Register now for early access to tickets.
