BETWAY SA20 STARS PROMINENT IN MUCH-CHANGED ENGLAND WHITE-BALL SQUADS
Barely 24 hours after their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup defense came to a premature end in India, England named new-look white-ball squads laden with Betway SA20 stars for next month’s ODI and IT20 series away to West Indies.
England’s ODI squad for three 50-over matches in Antigua and Barbados sees only six players remain from the World Cup in India. Four of those, captain Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone and Brydon Carse (an injury replacement for Reece Topley during the tournament) will be in action when Betway SA20 Season 2 gets underway on 10 January 2024.
Joining them in the Caribbean will be the Pretoria Capitals duo of Will Jacks and Phil Salt who will make returns to the England ODI set-up. As will John Turner, signed by Paarl Royals at this year’s SA20 auction, aiming to get his first national cap.
That means seven of England's new 15-player ODI squad are signed to play in South Africa’s premier T20 league.
Will Jacks and Phil Salt will look to fine-tune their games in the Caribbean before leading Pretoria Capitals' charge on the Betway SA20 Season 2 title.
Meanwhile, England’s T20I squad for five 20-over matches in Barbados, Grenada and Trinidad will feature nine SA20 stars. When the 50-over leg finishes, six of the seven ‘originals’ will stay on, with the aforementioned Reece Topley replacing Carse. Moeen Ali (Joburg Super Kings) and Adil Rashid (Pretoria Capitals) will swell the SA20 count.
A surprise omission may be that of Dawid Malan. The Sunrisers Eastern Cape opener was comfortably England’s top run-scorer during the ongoing world showpiece in India – with 404 runs – but he also became a father again a month before the tournament so probably deserves some leave.
Durban's Super Giants' Reece Topley left the World Cup with injury, but is fit enough for England's next T20I assignment against the West Indies.
THE TWO ENGLAND SQUADS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
ODI squad
Jos Buttler (captain – Paarl Royals), Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse (Sunrisers Eastern Cape), Zak Crawley, Sam Curran (MI Cape Town), Ben Duckett, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks (Pretoria Capitals), Liam Livingstone (MI Cape Town), Ollie Pope, Phil Salt (Pretoria Capitals), Josh Tongue, John Turner (Paarl Royals).
T20I squad
