Sunrisers Eastern Cape duo Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje have been named in the Proteas’ Men’s 15-player T20 World Cup squad on Friday.

De Kock and Nortje both featured in the last T20 World Cup final for the Proteas in Barbados in June 2024 before spending time away from the national team.

But the experienced duo returned to international duty on the recent tour to India, and are currently excelling in Betway SA20 Season 4. De Kock is third on the batting leaderboard with 126 runs at average of 42.0, while Nortje is joint second on the corresponding bowlers’ chart with six wickets.

Durban Super Giants’ skipper Aiden Markram will captain a Proteas side that is blessed with a strong leadership group, including Paarl Royals captain David Miller and his Pretoria Capitals counterpart Keshav Maharaj.

MI Cape Town’s fast bowler Kagiso Rabada is also fit and firing after making his comeback from injury on New Year’s Eve at Newlands and will spearhead the Proteas’ attack in India and Sri Lanka.

There are also maiden ICC T20 World Cup berths for MI Cape Town trio Corbin Bosch, George Linde and Jason Smith alongside Durban’s Super Giants duo Tony de Zorzi and Kwena Maphaka.

Pretoria Capitals’ Dewald Brevis and Joburg Super Kings’ Donovan Ferreira will also make their ICC T20 World Cup debuts with experienced Capitals’ seamer Lungi Ngidi and Sunrisers allrounder Marco Jansen closing out the 15-player squad.

“Firstly, I would like to congratulate the players who will be representing South Africa at their maiden T20 World Cup. This is an incredible opportunity for them in what was a difficult squad to select,”

“We have had to make some big calls, but we feel this group is the strongest and has every chance of succeeding in India and Sri Lanka,” Proteas Men’s Convenor of Selectors Patrick Moroney said.

“We have assembled a world-class squad with some of the finest and most experienced players in the game, together with some of the best T20 youngsters coming through.”

The Proteas are drawn in Group D alongside Afghanistan, Canada, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates, and will begin their campaign on February 9 against Canada in Ahmedabad.
