CAPITALS’ STIRLING TO LEAD IRELAND AT T20 WORLD CUP
Pretoria Capitals’ Paul Stirling will lead Ireland’s 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and USA.
Opener Stirling (32) was appointed as Ireland’s permanent white-ball cricket captain in November 2023 and will be heading to his eighth T20 World Cup, since making his bow at the 2009 edition in England. The task awaiting Stirling and co will be trying to reach the second stage – like they did on debut in 2009 and two years ago in Australia – or better.
Stirling won’t be the only Betway SA20-signed player in the Irish squad. Paarl Royals wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker has also been selected. The 27-year-old is set for his third T20 showpiece tournament, having played in the 2021 and 2022 editions too.
Stirling, who played two matches for Royals in the inaugural season of SA20, moved up to Pretoria for Season 2 but didn’t see any action with them due to the form of their starting XI overseas players (Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Jimmy Neesham and Adil Rashid – all headed to the West Indies and USA too). Similarly, Tucker had English white-ball captain Jos Buttler ahead of him as Royals’ wicketkeeper-batter so is yet to make his SA20 bow.
Be that as it may the duo will be key to Ireland’s success in Group A, which features the powerhouses of India and Pakistan as well as co-hosts USA. Canada complete the group which will play all their matches in the USA, in Texas, New York and Florida.
