MI Cape Town enjoyed the ultimate Cinderella story in Season 3.

From basement dwellers the previous two seasons, Robin Peterson’s side rose like a phoenix from the ashes to be crowned Betway SA20 champions for the first time.

MI Cape Town were undoubtedly the best team in the competition, topping both the league table before cruising through their Qualifier 1 and eventual final.

From turning Newlands into a fortress by winning all five home games before sell-out crowds on each occasion, MI Cape Town took that form on to the road where they were equally dominant.

Whereas most teams struggled to get started in the Powerplay, MI Cape Town opening duo Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen were free flowing and full of runs.

The pair took their Season 2 form to the next level and put the opposition under pressure from the outset.

The addition of Reeza Hendricks at the pre-season auction brought great stability to the MI Cape Town top-order which provided the talented Dewald Brevis to express himself and play with freedom.

It certainly worked for Brevis with the 21-year-old striking the ball sweetly whilst taking some audacious catches to see him walk away with the Rising Star award at the end of the season.

Coach Peterson’s showed significant faith in the local players with MI Cape Town hardly exceeding two overseas players per match, which allowed the likes of Season 2 rookie Connor Esterhuizen, Delano Potgieter and George Linde to play with confidence and make valuable contributions along the way.

Having captain Rashid Khan back in the saddle made a huge difference to the team, while Trent Boult’s new-ball partnership with Kagiso Rabada was an absolute X-factor.
