STAR-STUDDED BETWAY SA20 CONTINGENT SET FOR IPL 2024
A star-studded group of Betway SA20-signed players will look to make a big impact on the Indian Premier League when it gets underway this coming Friday, 22 March.
The 17th edition of the IPL will feature 30 SA20-signed players across all 10 teams.
Defending champions, Chennai Super Kings have only one SA20-signed player in their Class of 2024, namely English allrounder Moeen Ali. That said, Stephen Fleming (head coach) and Eric Simons (bowling consultant) also serve on the Joburg Super Kings staff.
Meanwhile, last year’s IPL runners-up, Lucknow Super Giants have the most SA20 representatives with five players and four coaching staff – all of whom helped Durban’s Super Giants to 2024 SA20 Final.
Quinton de Kock, Kyle Mayers and Marcus Stoinis are into their third season with LSG, while Nicholas Pooran and Naveen-ul-Haq will spend their second campaign with them. Similarly, Morne Morkel and Jonty Rhodes will continue in their bowling coach and fielding coach roles while DSG head coach Lance Klusener and his assistant Sridharan Sriram have joined LSG as Justin Langer’s assistants this year.
Five Durban's Super Giants players will also turn out for their IPL sister team, Lucknow Super Giants.
Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians, who also contested the playoffs in 2023, have three and five players in their squad respectively.
The Titans trio is newly-married David Miller, Rashid Khan (making his return from a back injury) and spin sensation, Noor Ahmad – who took SA20 Season 2 by storm. MI, for their part, will look to integrate Gerald Coetzee (also returning from injury), Nuwan Thushara and Romario Shepherd into their set-up which also has Dewald Brevis, who’s going into his third IPL season. Kwena Maphaka became MI's five SA20-linked player this week as the 17-year-old's star continues to rise. The MI staff, meanwhile, features Kieron Pollard as batting coach, while Lasith Malinga (bowling coach) and James Pamment (bowling coach) reprise their SA20 roles under Mark Boucher.
Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore will hope that their SA20 contingent can help them reach the playoffs which they just missed out on in 2023.
For Royals, Nandre Burger is the newbie joining Jos Buttler and Donovan Ferreira. Buttler is going into his seventh season in pink. Faf du Plessis will continue as RCB captain hoping that Englishmen Reece Topley and Will Jacks maintain their SA20 form this campaign.
Similarly, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad will rely on their stars making a big impact if they are to improve on their 2023 showings.
At KKR, Jason Roy withdrew but was quickly replaced by Phil Salt who surprisingly wasn’t signed up by any team during the auction. Rilee Rossouw was signed during the auction, by the Kings, and will join Kagiso Rabada, Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran. Delhi Capitals snapped up Tristan Stubbs in the auction and would have been pleased with his SA20 Season 2 showing and the fact that Anrich Nortje has successfully recovered from his back injury in time for the IPL season (and emerged unscathed from his first few matches post-recovery) - especially because Lungi Ngidi has himself withdrawn through injury. At Sunrisers Hyderabad, Aiden Markram has lost the captaincy which the 29-year-old will hope to be a positive for his batting ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup, which he will lead the Proteas into. Marco Jansen carried his SA20 form, straight into the CSA T20 Challenge so will be confident of hitting the ground running in India, as will SA20 Player of the Season Heinrich Klaasen who has limited his workload post-SA20 to be fresh for the crucial next two months of 20-over cricket.
Marco Jansen and Aiden Markram will look to replicate their Sunrisers Eastern Cape success with their sister team in Hyderabad.
