ICYMI: THE RECORDS WHICH FELL ON ‘SUPER SATURDAY’
Cricket fans were treated to a Betway SA20 double header to remember as records tumbled at both Wanderers and St George’s Park.
Here’s a recap of which new marks were set:
JOBURG SUPER KINGS VS MI CAPE TOWN AT WANDERERS
243
MI Cape Town’s 243-run team total on Saturday means they’ve bettered their best in two consecutive matches, following the 207/5 they tallied on Thursday against Durban’s Super Giants. 171 was the best they achieved during Season 1 – at home against Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
200
Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton’s opening partnership for MICT against JSK comfortably beat the previous Betway SA20 record for any partnership – the 157 set by two onlookers at Wanderers, Faf du Plessis and Reeza Hendricks, against Durban’s Super Giants last season at the same ground.
104
In scoring the fourth SA20 century, ‘RVD’ also more than doubled his previous highest score in the League, 51 against Pretoria Capitals at Centurion in 2023.
98
Meanwhile, Rickelton not only bettered his SA20 best for a second match running (after his 87 against Durban’s Super Giants on Thursday beat his best of 46 last season), but the 98 runs he tallied on Saturday is now also his career-best T20 score.
98
MI Cape Town’s winning margin on Saturday easily eclipsed their previous best of just 13 runs, away at Paarl Royals in 2023. In turn, Joburg Super Kings also suffered their heaviest SA20 defeat at the Wanderers. Last season, their ‘worst’ loss was by only 14 runs in the semi-final against Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
2/53
Saturday was by no means a bowler’s day, especially for Joburg Super Kings; nonetheless, Nandre Burger’s 2/53 is now his best figures in the competition. The left-arm quick's best last season – when he played five matches - was only a ‘one-for’ (1/24) against Pretoria Capitals at Centurion.
1/17
After only playing a single match during SA20 Season 1, Beuran Hendricks has started both MICT’s matches this campaign. His 1/17 on Saturday is thus his best bowling figures in the League – bettering his 1/42 at Kingsmead on Thursday against DSG.
SUNRISERS EASTERN CAPE VS DURBAN’S SUPER GIANTS AT ST GEORGE’S PARK
75
Back in a familiar setting, Durban’s Super Giants Jon-Jon Smuts made full use of his St George’s Park knowledge to bash his best score in SA20 matches. The 75 off 38 balls against his Season 1 teammates, eclipsed the 66 against Pretoria Capitals (also at St George’s Park) in orange last year.

Tom Abell's SA20-best of 65 off 36 gave Sunrisers Eastern Cape's inning impetus in their run chase against Durban's Super Giants.
65
In his solitary SA20 match in 2023, Tom Abell gave the Orange Army a taste of what he’s capable of by scoring a quick-fire 40 not out against Pretoria Capitals. On Saturday, he again had the St George’s Park crowd on their feet thanks to his new League-best of 65 off 36 balls.
55
Tristan Stubbs didn’t have the Season 1 he would’ve wanted with the bat (with a best of only 30), but on Saturday he showed what his capable of in thumping a rapid-fire 55 off 26 balls to show he’s returning to his best.
60
Granted it’s only his second match in South Africa’s premier T20 league, but Nicholas Pooran’s 37-ball 60 immediately becomes his highest score in the competition. Durban’s Super Giants fans, of course, will be eager for it to be bettered still.
2/36
As it happened for JJ Smuts, Saturday was a double record-breaking day for him – last season his best bowling figures in Sunrisers’ orange kit was 1/8 against Joburg Super Kings at St George’s. It’s now 2/36.
2/32
Similar to Pooran, Richard Gleeson only has a two-match SA20 career, but Saturdays’s spell of 2/32 is now his best in the League – bettering the 1/47 he claimed against MI Cape Town mere hours after landing in South Africa as a replacement player for DSG.
2/19
While the batsmen were claiming the headlines at St George’s Park, Dwaine Pretorius’s tidy spell of 2/19 just edged his previous best in the League – his 2/20 against Pretoria Capitals up at Centurion last season.
Will more records fall during Sunday’s action at Centurion when Pretoria Capitals’ host Paarl Royals - who defeated them on Friday?
