I'M A BIG SITUATION PLAYER, SAYS KLAASEN AFTER RECORD IPL TON

In a spectacular display of batting prowess, Heinrich Klaasen has once again solidified his position as a white-ball sensation, closing the Indian Premier League (IPL) season with an explosive century.

Klaasen, who holds the record for the fastest half-century in Betway SA20 history, showcased his power-hitting skills for the Sunrisers Hyderabad against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.

The powerful middle-order batter delivered an explosive fireworks display, striking an unbeaten 105 runs off just 39 balls, including an astonishing nine sixes and seven fours. The batting bonanza equalled the record for the third fastest century in IPL history - underlining his reputation as one of the most destructive players in the game.

Klaasen’s renowned big-hitting against spin came to the fore, as he particularly targeted Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, amassing 24 runs from the former in just 10 deliveries, and an impressive 36 runs off the latter in 12 balls.

"The plan was to go straight on this ground," Klaasen said. "I improved my trajectory, and didn't take on too many fielders.”

This ability to judge length effectively had been a focus during his practice sessions, with Klaasen acknowledging its importance after experiencing a season filled with disappointments.

"It’s been a long season of disappointment and sometimes against your processes. Luckily, I stuck to it and finally I've got a little bit of reward," he said.

Much like at the Durban’ Super Giants during a disappointing Betway SA20 Season 3, there has been plenty of conjecture at the IPL about where Klaasen is best utilised in the batting line-up.

He has shifted between No’s 4-6 throughout the competition, but walked in at No 3 against KKR.

"Look, I'm a big situation player," he said. "That's the whole idea in the dugout as well.

“Sometimes it works out that you lose that wicket just off the Powerplay or the back end of the Powerplay and then I can go in.

“So, it's normally around that fifth or sixth over or just after the Powerplay. That's ideally when I want to go in. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. I've still got to do the job."

Despite the uncertainty, Klaasen still emerged as the leading run-scorer for Sunrisers this season with a total of 487 runs at an average of 44.27 and a stunning strike rate of 172.69,

Despite his efforts, the team did not qualify for the playoffs, but Klaasen expressed gratitude for the investment his franchise made in him. The record R49 million retention fee—the highest in IPL history—serves as a reflection of the faith that Sunrisers have in his abilities.

“I want to thank my family and the franchise,” he stated. “They spend a lot of time and effort and a lot of money into this brand of cricket and we owe it to them to step up to the plate and dish out good performances.

“For us to turn it around and play brilliant cricket over the last three and a half games was vital,” he said.
