HOW BETWAY SA20 IS HARDENING SA'S NEXT GENERATION LIKE CONNOR ESTERHUIZEN

When Connor Esterhuizen bludgeoned his way to a maiden T20 International half-century off just 33 deliveries in Wellington on Sunday, he did more than just anchor the Proteas innings. 

He offered undeniable proof that Betway SA20 is the ultimate finishing school for international readiness.

Currently the leading run-scorer on the Proteas' ongoing tour of New Zealand - boasting 125 runs at an imposing average of 41.66 and a strike rate of 120.19 - Esterhuizen is playing with a maturity that completely belies his newcomer status.

Picked up as a Rookie by MI Cape Town in Season 2, Esterhuizen was exposed to seasoned internationals and high-quality coaches like former Proteas Robin Peterson and Hashim Amla. 

The link-up with Amla was hugely beneficial as it continued the working relationship the pair shared at the Lions domestic union, which paid dividends in Season 2 when Esterhuizen played a prominent role in bringing the trophy to Newlands in Season 3. 

A strategic switch to Pretoria Capitals resulted in Esterhuizen moving to the top of the order when he helped Sourav Ganguly’s side to the Season 4 Final.

This intense franchise crucible has clearly equipped the 24-year-old with the mental fortitude to make the leap to international cricket.

"I think for most people, the talent is sort of always there, but it's hard to use that talent and the decision-making that comes with it," Esterhuizen said.

"That, I think, is the key the higher up you go in this game. I think the second thing is just how to deal with failures, because this game is a game of failures."

Beyond personal resilience, the SA20 ecosystem has further helped Esterhuizen seamlessly adapt to the international stage with his Capitals skipper, Keshav Maharaj, currently leading the Proteas in New Zealand.

“I love having Kesh as my captain,” Esterhuizen said. “He was my captain at SA20. And just the compassion and the kindness, but also the excellency he drives from the young guys, but everyone in the team is something that us as youngsters can look up to.

“Just the calmness that he holds himself to and the rest of the team follows suit. So it's amazing to have Kesh as captain.”

Maharaj himself is quick to recognise the broader benefits of the League.

"Look, I think SA20 has been phenomenal for our system. We've seen the Proteas that we've produced especially in the white-ball versions of the game. Guys have just taken to it, showing their national ability and it's given them the opportunity to play against the best and find ways to combat the best,” Maharaj said. 

“So, I think it's done wonders, we've seen the new faces not just in this squad but obviously in previous squads that have played and see how they've taken to international cricket, I mean Nqobani Mokoena is a prime example of a product of SA20. 

“There's a few guys that have stood up, obviously Jordan [Hermann] was one of them unfortunately he got injured. So, it's really nice for us, it's a wonderful opportunity like I said to showcase your ability and express yourselves against some of the best T20 cricketers in the world especially in what they do."
