Get to know: Mitchell Marsh (Sunrisers Eastern Cape)

There are few names in modern Australian cricket that carry the weight Mitchell Marsh's does, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape have landed one of the biggest.

The 34-year-old allrounder makes his Betway SA20 debut this coming January, bringing with him 88 T20I caps, a World Cup-winning résumé, and a game built for the shortest format.

Born in Western Australia, in October 1991, Marsh has the blue blood of Australian cricket royalty running through his veins.

The son of Geoff Marsh, the former Australia opener who went on to coach and select the Baggy Greens and is the younger brother of Test batter Shaun Marsh. Marsh was, in many ways, destined for the international stage and made his state one-day debut at just 17, becoming the youngest player in the competition's history, before captaining Australia's Under-19 side to World Cup glory in 2010.

Graduation to the senior ranks was, however, not as smooth with Marsh struggling to maintain a regular place in the Australian line-up after his international debut in 2011.

A decade later, however, proved to be the turning point with a matured Marsh being promoted to No. 3 in Australia's T20I order. He was now the top-order enforcer franchise sides crave after a breakthrough at the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE, where his unbeaten 77 off 50 balls in the final against New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium earned him the Player of the Match award as Australia lifted their first title in the format. 

From there, Marsh's career gathered momentum. He was vice-captain for Australia's run to the 2023 ODI World Cup final in India, striking twin centuries against Bangladesh and Pakistan along the way and capped a career-best 2023 with the Allan Border Medal as Australia's top international performer across all three formats. A stunning return to Test cricket that same year, via a run-a-ball century at Headingley during the Ashes, underlined his pedigree. 

He was rewarded with the full-time captaincy of Australia's T20I side in mid-2024 where he has continued to lead from the front with bat and occasional medium pace.

Marsh has also elevated his franchise form too after an excellent last IPL season where he smashed 627 runs at a strike-rate of 163.70, which included his maiden century.

He has also been prolific in the on-going Hundred competition in England having struck 290 runs in five matches at an average of 58 and strike-rate of 58.00. 

Marsh is expected to slot in at the top of the order for Sunrisers Eastern Cape alongside last season’s Betway SA20 Player of the Season Quinton de Kock.
