BREVIS' 56 NOT ENOUGH FOR MI NEW YORK
Dewald Brevis' fine half-century could not prevent MI New York from going down in a last-ball thriller to San Francisco Unicorns in Dallas last night.
After being restored to the opening slot for just his second match of Major League Cricket Season 2, Brevis struck the ball sweetly to set up MI New York’s run-chase.
The defending champions looked in control of proceedings at 79/1 with Brevis and Durban’s Super Giants superstar Nicholas Pooran at the crease.
Brevis was in scintillating form as he dominated the 77-run partnership off just 50 balls, bringing up his half-century off just 32 balls (4x4, 3x6).
But unfortunately for the 21-year-old, he feathered a Brody Couch delivery that slid down the leg-side to Australian wicketkeeper Josh Inglis and had to depart for 56.
MI New York’s run-chase stumbled from thereon with Brevis’ MI Cape Town captain Kieron Pollard also falling to review shortly afterwards.
Pooran was MI New York’s last senior batter at the crease, but when he was clean bowled by a slower ball for 26 off 30 balls (2x4), there was just too much left to do for Rashid Khan and the lower order as the Unicorns held their nerve at the death.
The race for a spot in the MLC Season 2 playoffs is certainly heating up with a couple of important fixtures set to take place this weekend.
Faf du Plessis’ Texas Super Kings face up to the Washington Freedom on Friday evening before MLC’s Season 2 leading run-scorer Ryan Rickelton will get another opportunity to continue his fine batting form for the Seattle Orcas against the San Francisco Unicorns on Sunday.
