UNSUNG HEROES: ST GEORGE'S PARK'S DONUT KING, AZIEZ DAVIDS

Gqeberha’s Aziez Davids has turned what could have been a fleeting venture into a thriving business that not only fills stomachs but also injects hope into a community beset by high unemployment. 

Davids’ story is woven with the threads of serendipity and determination and is one of transformation and resilience.

“They say you live your life in retrospect,” Davids shared, reflecting on the path that brought to St George’s Park, where he has become part of the furniture the past 20 years.

His journey is a testament to the idea that sometimes, our greatest blessings are born from challenges. When his mother lost her job, a chance conversation with a neighbour led to where Davids’ unexpected role began. 

“I can thank my lucky stars that my mom lost her job when a neighbor told her to come to Quantic Towers, there's somebody that needs your assistance,” Davids said.

“She was running the donut shop there by a flea market, the Friday came, I was helping her and then the gentleman said come come we're going to the cricket.

“I'm thinking, ‘Hey, we're going to go watch the cricket now and enjoy ourselves!’

“Low and behold that wasn't the case, we came to work and this has been my position the whole time,” he laughed, recounting that pivotal moment.

What started as a simple side hustle has blossomed into a small business that stands as a beacon of hope in an area grappling with one of the highest unemployment rates in South Africa. 

Davids’ venture has not only sustained his family but also allowed him to provide a lifeline in a community where every job counts.

“For five days a week, we can put food on the table for 10 extra people,” Davids explained, highlighting the widespread impact of his operations. 

The match days, often viewed simply as single events, require extensive preparation that spans a full week. “Proper planning prevents poor performance,” he quoted his wife, a mantra that underscores the meticulous nature of their work.

Davids and his team don’t simply sell donuts; they study the craft globally, taking inspiration from renowned names in the industry, like the celebrated LA Donuts. 

This international perspective not only enhances the quality of their products but also raises the profile of their small business.

“We cannot stay static,” Davids emphasised, embodying the spirit of innovation. 

As Davids continues to navigate the twists and turns of entrepreneurship, he remains focused on the ultimate goal: creating happiness through his work and giving back to the community that shaped him.
