AUSTRALIA PICK DSG DUO STOINIS AND AGAR IN T20 WORLD CUP SQUAD
Australia have named Durban’s Super Giants’ Betway SA20 Season 2 Wildcards Marcus Stoinis and Ashton Agar in their T20 World Cup squad.
Stoinis played five matches for DSG during his stint and showcased his allround abilities as they secured their playoffs spot. The 34-year-old contributed 10 wickets, 63 runs and one catch to their successful campaign. His standout performance, a spell of 3/18, came in DSG’s victory over Paarl Royals away at Boland Park.
When Stoinis departed Durban ahead of the playoffs for international commitments with Australia, Agar replaced him.
As it happened, the 30-year-old spinner played a support rather than playing role as DSG took the long road to Final, via Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2, where they lost out to Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Nonetheless, Agar has been backed by Australia’s Chairman of Selectors to perform in the T20 World Cup.
“It’s great to have Ashton Agar back into the squad following a spate of unfortunate and untimely injuries,” Bailey said.
“We believe Ashton can play a critical role in this tournament along with Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cam Green and Mitch Marsh [Australia’s new permanent T20I captain] in complementing our front-line attack options.
Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade, who had a stint with Joburg Super Kings during the inaugural season of SA20 and allrounder Tim David who did so with MI Cape Town have also been named in the Australian squad who are in Group B alongside England, Namibia, Scotland and Oman.
