KNOW YOUR TEAM: SUNRISERS EASTERN CAPE
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape were the Cinderella story of Betway SA20 Season 1.
The Gqeberha-based team’s championship success was built on securing the best young talent available along with dutiful overseas professionals that were able to come together quickly and form an unwavering team spirit. Duly the likes of Adam Rossington, Sisanda Magala, Ottniel Baartman and Jordan Hermann all played their part in the 'Orange Army's' success.
They also possessed the eventual Player of the Tournament in captain Aiden Markram and a 'Bulldog' in Roelof van der Merwe - the bowler of Season 1.
Unfortunately, Van der Merwe is not available for Season 2, but the Sunrisers have made adequate provision. with the signing of England all-rounder Liam Dawson and have also traded Jon-Jon Smuts for Simon Harmer. Equally, they have also crucially bolstered their batting unit with the arrival of former ICC World No 1 T20 batter Dawid Malan.
The Sunrisers are fully aware that teams will now no longer be underestimating them, but wily coach Adi Birrell - who has added the equally experienced Russell Domingo to his staff - will certainly have prepared his team for that as they hope for a successful defense of their title.
