BY THE NUMBERS: THE RECORDS BROKEN IN SEASON 2

Betway SA20 Season 2 saw an abundance of new League records being set. Some incredible, some unwanted and some that may take a long time to be surpassed.

Here is a round-up of them:

WITH THE BAT

MI Cape Town’s Ryan Rickelton had an incredible campaign totting up 530 runs – comfortably more than the number, 391, Jos Buttler top-scored with in Season 1. Apart from MICT missing out on the playoffs, the only ‘blemish’ on Rickelton’s copy-book is not converting three 90s and an 87 into a century…

When Pretoria Capitals found themselves 41-6 at home against MI Cape Town their 2024 campaign looked over, with a game to spare. However, Kyle Verreynne played a rearguard effort for the ages to not only deny the Capetonians a bonus point but also guide Capitals to record second-innings total of 214-8. It may have been a losing effort but still took the Race to the Playoffs to an exciting climax on the final group stage weekend.

Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton may have been in MI Cape Town colours, but when the pair stepped out at Wanderers together, they were ‘home’. The duo made the familiarity count as they feasted on the Joburg Super Kings bowling to the tune of 200 runs, breaking the League’s previous best partnership of 154 set by Faf du Plessis and Reeza Hendricks, who were onlookers to their carnage.

Pretoria Capitals' Kyle Verreynne secured his place in the SA20 record books with an incredible rearguard batting effort against MI Cape Town, smashing his way to an unbeaten 116 when Capitals at one stage were 42-6. Verreynne almost single-handedly kept the sky blues in the playoffs race by denying MICT a bonus point.

Verreynne also finished with the best batting average of either SA20 season so far. He scored 256 runs during his six innings, which included two not outs - giving him an average of 64.00.

Pretoria Capitals set a new SA20 record against Sunrisers Eastern Cape, but not in the way they would have wanted when they were skittled for just 52 at St George’s Park. The Orange Army, did similar to Joburg Super Kings at Wanderers, bowling them out for just 78.

For the second-straight season, Paarl Royals’ Jos Buttler topped the most fours leaderboard. In 2023 he was joint-most with Faf du Plessis on 36. This season the English opener claimed the top spot for himself with 44.

Pretoria Capitals allrounder Will Jacks set a new League record in thumping Durban Super Giants all over Centurion, bringing up his hundred in just 41 balls.

Ryan Rickelton smashed the most sixes in the group stage, with 34, but Heinrich Klaasen made full use of playoffs week to surpass the MI Cape Town batter in three categories - Betway Player of the Season, Batter of the Season and the sixes hit. Klaasen's new record of 37 is almost double what Will Jacks set the bar at in Season 1 (19).

While Pretoria Capitals and MI Cape Town didn't reach the Playoffs, they did jointly contribute to the League's new 'sixes in a match' record. When they met at Centurion in Match 26, MICT showed their intent by smashing 20 sixes on the way to Season 2's highest team total of 248-4. Each of MICT's six batters contributed at least one maximum. When Capitals found themselves 42-6 in the chase, many were looking at what SA20's record defeat number was... but Kyle Verreynne 116-run rearguard denied the visitors the bonus point they craved and included nine sixes which, when added to Will Jacks earlier three, too the match's six count to 32.

All it took for Heinrich Klaasen to score a 50 against Paarl Royals at Kingsmead was 16 balls – breaking a record Donovan Ferreira had set (18 balls) just a week previously.

Pretoria Capitals duo Will Jacks and Kyle Verreynne are the new owners of SA20's most sixes in an innings record. Jacks' nine sixes came during his 101 against Durban's Super Giants while Verreynne bashed nine during his 116* against MI Cape Town.

The highveld can sometimes be unkind to bowlers, and Daryn Dupavillon found that to be most true when MI Cape Town went on the rampage at Centurion to keep their playoffs hopes alive. By the end of their mammoth 243, the lanky pace bowler had been clobbered for 73 runs form his four overs, handing him the unwanted ‘most runs conceded in an innings’ record.

IN THE FIELD

Tristan Stubbs and Wiaan Mulder both set new SA20 records for their exploits in the field during Season 2.

Tristan Stubbs spent the whole of the 2023 campaign as batter and outfielder, but just two matches into this campaign, he took over the gloves from Adam Rossington and has not looked back. His 12 dismissals in the group stage is a new season’s best – and a few opportunities to extend his new record lay ahead this week.

Tristan Stubbs didn’t start the season as Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s but since taking the gloves, off Adam Rossington, in their third match of the season he has grown in leaps and bounds. There was a fair bit of that happening when ‘Stubbo’ claimed a League record five catches behind the wicket at Wanderers against Joburg Super Kings including one incredible diving effort down the leg side to dismiss dangerman Moeen Ali.

Durban’s Super Giants have benefitted from a Wiaan Mulder high on confidence this season and no better was this illustrated when the allrounder claimed four catches against Paarl Royals at Boland Park, setting one of the many new records in SA20.
