MEET THE COACH | Adrian Birrell, Sunrisers Eastern Cape
Born and raised in Makhanda, you could barely find a prouder representative of the Eastern Cape - which is why it's apt that Adrian Birrell coaches Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The 63-year-old played for Eastern Province at school and first class level, before turning to coaching. Locally he has overseen the Titans and Warriors before coaching Ireland at the 2007 ICC World Cup. In 2013 he was appointed assistant coach of the South African national team and he has been head coach of Hampshire in County cricket since 2018 - alongside his SEC role. Unfancied in Betway SA20 Season 1, especially after an indifferent start, Birrell showed his powers of motivation (and pure coaching ability) to lead his team to the inaugural title.
