ROBBIE P: FRESH FACES MADE THE DIFFERENCE IN MICT'S TITLE WIN

MI Cape Town coach Robin Peterson has paid tribute to the Mumbai Indians franchise owners for having the faith in him to bring home their first-ever Betway SA20 title.

It had been an arduous opening two seasons for MI Cape Town in South Africa’s premier T20 franchise league. After finishing last in the inaugural season, Peterson was called in to replace former Australian international Simon Katich.

But Peterson did not fare any better in his first season in charge as MI Cape Town once again missed out on the Playoffs in Season 2.

It would have been easy for the Mumbai Indians management to release Peterson, but instead they stuck with the former Proteas all-rounder in the hope that he could bring about a positive change.

The turnaround has been nothing short of sensational with MI Cape Town topping the table with a record 35 points before winning the first Playoffs match, Qualifier 1 to advance to the final where they dispatched former double defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape by 76 runs at the Wanderers with owner Akash Ambani in attendance.

“I think every time you're involved with Mumbai Indians, you are expected to win,” Peterson said.

“It's no different here, even though the first two years we did try our best, things didn't work out. Bringing Rash back, getting Boulty here and a couple of new additions definitely made the difference.

“Not only in the dressing room but on the field as well with their experience. Just a couple of fresh faces, it's amazing how it changed the environment a little bit.

“There's always pressure when you're with MI, it's a proud franchise. But the one thing I have to say is that they do back us quite a bit. That backing and allowing us to give it another crack, we've got to be thankful to the owners and the management above us.”

MI Cape Town's success was bult on well-researched auction buys, the return of captain Rashid Khan, top signings like Trent Boult and trust in the coach from the owner, Akash Ambani

MI Cape Town’s title victory was also significant due to the trust shown by Peterson and his coaching staff in the ability of the local South African players.

The 2025 champions utilised their allocation of four overseas players in the starting XI in only one match in their entire campaign.

“It was just about balancing the team, what skill sets we need,” Peterson said. “It was not as if we planned it, it just happened by design basically.

“I think the local players we brought in are internationals too. People often forget that. It made it a little bit easier.”

Captain Rashid Khan was equally pleased the success attained was not due to any individual superstar performers, but that the load was spread evenly across the squad.

“Winning 5 out of these 6 (league) games with a bonus point, I think that's unbelievable.  We were at the bottom of the table and then coming up, finishing at the top of the table and then winning the final. (0:32) I think we got the most points in the group stages as well. That's something that was amazing,” Rashid said.

“It shows how everyone contributed to the win and I'm so happy the way we have contributed as a team. It's not like depending on one or two guys but overall everyone is contributing.

“If it's one wicket or someone has scored 15 runs, it's crucial for the team at that time and I felt credit goes to each and everyone. The way we got the support from the back-up, head coach, Robbie and the way they kept the environment was something very special.”
