Betway SA20 Rising Star Dewald Brevis may have been a late arrival at the Indian Premier League this year, but he certainly made up for lost time.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a breakout season for his new team, Chennai Super Kings, with the youngster blasting 225 runs at an average of 37.0 at an amazing strike-rate of 180!

Brevis closed out the 2025 season with another sparkling 57 off just 23 balls (4x4, 5x6) to propel CSK to a massive 230/5 against the Gujarat Titans on Sunday. It was enough for the Super Kings to end their campaign on a positive note after the bowlers restricted the Titans to 147.

“When I went out there, I always wanted to play for the team. I needed to play an innings like that,” Brevis said.

"I am happy, I am enjoying the game, having fun out there.

“Need to be myself, need to be that kid who has always enjoyed the game while playing out there. Need to stay out there and enjoy every moment. I am very grateful for it.”

Brevis has been in scintillating form since powering MI Cape Town to their inaugural Betway SA20 title back in February, and carried it through to the Titans in both the first-class and white-ball domestic competitions.

He feels that the regular gametime is helping him fulfil the immense promise he showed when he first burst on the scene at the ICC U19 World Cup in 2022.

“I need to keep playing, that's what everyone has said. People have said that red-ball cricket is the pinnacle,” Brevis said.

“Need to keep playing and do what's right for your game. That plays a key role for batting a long time out there.”

Brevis certainly enjoyed batting on the Ahmedabad surface.

“It's a beautiful place to bat. It's as good as Paternoster!” he said.

Equally, the youngster has come to terms with being compared to his hero and Betway SA20 ambassador AB de Villiers after initially being weighed down by the expectation.

“It (being compared to AB) has always been a privilege, because AB is someone I look up to,” Brevis said.

“He has helped in improving my game, but I want to be my own player. It's an honour to be compared to him.”

Brevis will now head off to England where he will play for the Hampshire Hawks under Sunrisers Eastern Cape coach Adrian Birrell in T20 Blast.
